    The Fiddler's Ball

The stately sarabande leads all the dancers 'round
To a solemn beat and quiet melody
Until, at last, every one has found,
    The musicians' inner harmony

A waltz is for the lovers, old
    A waltz for lovers new
And if your unknown love is bold
    A showing of what's true

    When the fiddler steps forward
And his fingers find a jig
From the grace of three four time
    They seemingly renege

Legs fly up and legs fly down,
There is not a space for breathing
You cannot spy nor spot a frown
The floor is full and seething

    Suddenly a respite;
Or is all not as it seems?
    This chorus seems too bright
    To usher in calm dreams

A country dance is what they play
The tune calls those who ceased
To hold the band at bay
While the dancers' numbers do increase

    They twirl the ladies under,
    Switch them back again!
    Any watchers wonder,
If they might still join in

    The gentlemen rock steady,
    They guide the ladies through
    A hand extended, ready,
    To start up something new

    Once more the fiddle sounds,
But the ending has drawn near,
The dancers by the notes are bound
    To the fiddling puppeteer
    Can I come?

Sounds like someone got tired of doing "darkest deads at night" and let slip with a little high flown verse. ;)

On the contrary. Balls are a wonderful place to purloin jewelry
