I went out to tea today... And somehow, this is what I ended up writing. I may add more to it later.

    Soldiers solemn slowly marched
Across a land by Darkness parched
The drums sang quick .. and low ... and hard
The dreary beat of their retreat
The drums throbbed slow .. and thick... a shard
Of their shattered hope glistening in the heat.

Warriors weary walk still in pace
    Shifting dusts their steps erase
The knapsacks on mens' shoulders slip ... and droop ... and list
There is no rest as they trudge west
The knapsacks from mens' shoulders fall and are not missed
Watch the flaming sun fall slowly from sky's crest

    Shimmering stillness of desert air
Mocking hills that stand and stare
Spreading stars are bright and fair
And yet you find no comfort there

Men of Courage -- Rise yet
Men of Honor -- Well met
The foe has spread his net
But the hook has not been set
  1.
It paints a very vivid picture.

I am planning on making a somewhat more cheerful few stanzas. Less despair, a little more optimism. You know the stuff.
  2.
    With a dash of cheer?

    Bring it on.

Men of Honor -- Well met
The foe has spread his net
But the hook has not been set

    Fighters fierce turning stand
    "Halt this fleeing" they demand
The trumpets sound a rally ... a call .. an end
To broken tread and shameful drifting
The trumptets ring past valley .. and wall ... and send
A rush of new resolve, See! Despair is lifting

    Men-at-arms march quickly east
As though their steps carried them to feast
The swords are buckled on ... the bow ... the knife
Armor caught from where it fell
The swords whistle free ... the twang ... the plunge
Once defeated, they sound darkness' death knell

    Shimmering quickness of battling men
Glistening rains fall hard, fast, silver and fair
Rising dawn sees villains retreat to their den
The battle follows, assult is made upon the evil lair

Men of Courage -- well met
Men of Honor -- stand we in your debt
The foe had spread his net
But you have slain the threat

    Just a dash, mind you
  3.
    Hip-Hip-Hurrah!

Very martial and stirring. I like.
